Galungan & Kuningan are among the most meaningful and cherished celebrations in Bali, marking a time when the island feels even more alive with color, devotion, and togetherness. These sacred days symbolize the triumph of dharma (good) over adharma (negativity), and they bring families, communities, and entire villages into a shared rhythm of prayer, gratitude, and cultural harmony.
This year, our team at Bali Style Tours had the honor of experiencing these ceremonies at Goa Giri Temple in Nusa Penida — a peaceful and mystical hillside temple surrounded by nature. The atmosphere here is truly unique: quiet yet powerful, serene yet deeply spiritual.
As we walked through the temple grounds, we were welcomed by the sight of families dressed in traditional kebaya and kamen, carrying beautifully arranged offerings made at home with love. The scent of incense drifted gently through the temple, while the sound of priests chanting created a calm, heartfelt energy. Outside, the roads were decorated with tall, elegant penjor — bamboo poles adorned with young coconut leaves and flowers — symbolizing gratitude, prosperity, and the abundance of life.
Galungan marks the moment when ancestral spirits are believed to visit their homes, while Kuningan, celebrated ten days later, is the day they return to the heavens. This period is filled with prayers, offerings, and family reunions, reminding everyone of the importance of balance, kindness, and connection.
What makes Galungan & Kuningan so special is not only the rituals, but the atmosphere. Temples become vibrant with color, children run joyfully in ceremonial outfits, and the island moves at a slower, more mindful pace. It is a beautiful reminder of how deeply rooted tradition remains within the Balinese way of life.
🌿 Fun Fact About Galungan & Kuningan
The Balinese calendar, called the Pawukon calendar, is only 210 days long. Because of this, Galungan & Kuningan are celebrated twice every year. Each cycle offers another opportunity for families to reconnect, prepare offerings, invite ancestral spirits home, and continue traditions that have been passed down for generations.
Celebrating Galungan & Kuningan at Goa Giri Temple felt like stepping into the heart of Balinese spirituality — peaceful, meaningful, and full of cultural beauty. Moments like these are why we love sharing Bali with visitors from all around the world.
From all of us at Bali Style Tours, we wish you peace, blessings, and light during this Galungan & Kuningan season.
